Essential Tips for Healthy Aging

Let’s admit it, no one loves the idea of getting older. It can be daunting to feel our bodies changing and looking in the mirror to see ourselves aging. However, with age, can also come maturity, peace of mind, and true happiness. It’s time to talk about how to age with grace, both inside and out, to feel like the best version of yourself, no matter how many birthdays you’ve had!

Invest in skincare – The face and neck are the first areas to show signs of aging; wrinkles, fine lines, and sagging start in these areas so an anti-aging routine is a must as we get older. Incorporate many moisturizing products to your skincare, and even better, look for ones with retinol, vitamin C, and hyaluronic acid because all of these help prevent wrinkles and keep skin looking plump.

For men, it’s important to be mindful of your shaving routine as you get older. Using improper shaving techniques or low-quality products can cause irritation, dryness, and even scarring which can make your face look older. For starters, always shave with a fresh razor and good quality shaving products.

Wear sunscreen – If you haven’t started already, it’s time to get serious about sun protection because the sun’s UV rays can cause cancer and premature aging of the skin. It’s easy to incorporate sunscreen into your daily self-care routine, look for moisturizers or face makeup (like foundation or BB cream) and lotions with SPF to help prevent against aging. The sun can cause wrinkles, fine lines, and age spots, so even if it’s not a sunny day get in the habit of adding an SPF to your face and body every day.

Eat balanced and exercise – Although it’s important to eat well and move often, as we age, it’s more important to eat balanced and do activities we think are fun. Being too restrictive with a diet and exercise regime can cause anxiety and unhappiness, thus not leading great results. It’s important that we eat things we want to in moderation and to enjoy our workouts. Don’t go to the gym for strength training if you dread it every day, instead, spend your time doing an activity you love like riding a bike or playing a sport.

Reduce stress – No matter where stress comes from, it could be from diet and exercise like mentioned above, work, or even a close friend. It’s important to practice self-care and try to reduce the stress in our lives. Of course, not everyone can quit their job or ditch a stress-inducing friend, but we can take measures to ensure these areas in our life aren’t affecting our mental health. Start seeing a therapist, begin a meditation or yoga practice, or even just spend more time with the people you love. As we age, our mental health is just as important as our physical health.

There are amazing benefits in life as we get older, however, people usually talk about aging with a negative connotation. Coming to terms with getting older is hard, but when you take care of your face and body you can look as good on the outside as you feel on the inside!
